A small finish, a sandwich and 96 HSTs

I had a great weekend and I'm happy to report that all of my goals for the weekend were met (sort of!).  First, I finished the 2nd small table topper:

I decided to go with a different block for this second mini quilt.  The first one was called a "Carpenter Star" and this one is called "Railroad Crossing".  I found both patterns in the Pam and Nicky Lintott book Jelly Roll Sampler Quilts.

The fabric I used for both is part of the Presents Explorations collection by Windham Fabrics.

I had also planned to prepare Two Percent for quilting and that is now DONE.  I was hoping I was going to start quilting as well, but I'm not sure how to quilt this one so I decided to give myself another week to think about it.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Here it a picture of it - perhaps this will get your creative juices flowing!  :-)

And finally, because I completed the mini quilt and prepared Two Percent for quilting, I thought I'd start on another project.

This fabric is a what's left of a Giddy Jelly Roll (by Sandy Gervais for Moda) that I purchased in the Fall.  I'm crazy about those colours... just lovely.

By the way, there are 96 HSTs on that table... count 'em - 96!!!  Thank goodness for chain piecing...  I hope to be able to show pictures of a mostly finished quilt top when I get back from the cottage next Sunday.

And how was your weekend?

My Weekly To Do List

I sat in front of the computer for a long time trying to decide what I should plan to work on this weekend.  I need to finish something every weekend to feel like I'm accomplishing something - I guess that's what happens when you can only quilt on weekends.

So with that in mind, here is what I'm hoping to work on this week:

1.  A 2nd table topper (see the 1st one here).
2.  Start quilting Two Percent (I really mean it this time!)

That's it!  Not a lot but Two Percent will probably take a while to get ready for quilting so I'm trying to stay realistic.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Weigh-In Wednesday

Weigh In Wednesday

I'm linking up to Missy Mac's for Wednesday Weigh-In again this week.  I'm so very proud of myself this week - I was super good with the food AND took the dog for walks 3 times!  :-)

Before I put my stats out there I thought I could share a quick review of an App I found on the App Store a few weeks ago:  Lose-It.  You can use Lose-It to track you weight and exercise goals and, keep a food journal.  The database behind it has a gazillion different foods (even restaurant food) and their nutritional value (calories, fat grams, carbs, protein, etc.) or you can create your own "food" by entering the nutritional value of your favourite recipes.

The best part is that it takes the guess work completely out of losing weight.  You enter your current weight, your goal weight, and it calculates how many calories you must consume daily in order to lose weight.  For example, I said I wanted to lose 30 lbs by June 2.  That means I need to lose 1 1/2 lbs per week.  In order to do that, I have to stay under 1400 calories per day.  The food journal allows you to track your calories consumed but also tells you how many fat grams, carbs, protein so you can make sure your diet is pretty balanced (you don't want 1400 calories of fat!).

Lose-It is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.  I just love it!

So now for the stats:

Goal:  -30 lbs
This week: -2 lbs
Total:  -6 lbs
Inches:  - 1/2"
Total:  1.5"

It feels really, really good to see that my clothes (especially my pants) are starting to fit a lot better already.

Be sure to go on over to Missy Mac's and see what everyone else is up to!

Thanks for visiting!

Weekend Finishes

I had the most amazingly relaxing weekend!  My daughter spent the weekend with her dad and our youngest was spending the weekend at a friend's house so D and I were all alone at the cottage from Friday night until late afternoon Sunday!

And what did I do?  I slept 10 hours both nights, ate seafood for supper Saturday night (the kids hate seafood!), watched 2 hockey games and spent a bit of time quilting.  What more could I ask for?

I didn't spend a whole lot of time quilting - that would not have been very romantic - but I did manage to get a couple of things finished.

I completed the quilting and put the binding on my small table top from last week:

The picture isn't great (I really need to start taking better pictures!), but this little quilt is now sitting on an end table waiting for a little brother for the other end table!  Maybe next weekend...

My other goal for the weekend was to start sewing Full House, January's Schnibble.  I got the pattern in the mail last week and couldn't wait to get started.

And here it is!  I cannot believe I managed to finish the top in one day!  The little house blocks are so much fun to put together.

I chose Blueberry Crumb Cake charm squares for this one and really like the results.  The red sashing and border came from my stash.

And how was your weekend?

Weekend Projects

Well, here we are again, almost at the end of another week.  And for me, this means planning my quilting for the weekend.

So here is what I'm hoping to be able to get done:

1.  Finish the mini quilt I began last weekend.  I also realized when I posted about this mini quilt earlier this week, that I forgot to note the pattern and author so I could share with you on my blog.  So I will do that in my next post.

2.  Start working on the January Schnibble (Full House).  I ordered the pattern earlier this month, but it only arrived today.  Not sure which Charm Packs I'm going to use for that one...

3.  If time allows, prepare backing and sandwich for Two Percent.

That's it for now.  Talk to you later!

Wednesday Weigh In

Weigh In Wednesday

So not a fantastic week in the healthy living department. I did eat very well (until tonight at least - but it's my baby's 14th birthday today so that means cake). But, and it's a big but (no pun intended), no exercise to speak of this week.

Here are my stats:
Goal: - 30 lbs
This week: - 2 lbs
Total: - 4 lbs
Inches: no significant change
Total: - 1 inch

I plan on continuing with the meal plans for next week AND add at least 4 walks of 20-30 minutes each.

Be sure to go and support everyone over at Missy Mac's!

That's it for now. Talk to you later.

Weekend Finishes

I am feeling so lazy today - it was extremely hard to get up this morning to go to work, it was hard to clean-up the kitchen after dinner and it was REALLY hard to fold all of the laundry that D washed today.  And so once all of those jobs were done, it was very tempting to just sit my butt down on the sofa and watch Oprah's interview with the cast of Roots.  (Can you believe it's been 35 years already?!)

But I knew I had to post my weekend finishes tonight so here I am with all of the goodies I got done.

My goal was to finish up Baby Lattice Quilt - big checkmark next to that one:

I also wanted to prepare the quilt sandwish for Two Percent - unfortunately, this did not happen.  When the younger kids are both with us on the weekend, their "playroom", which is also my sewing room, looks like a tornado hit it.  So no floor space on which to lay down the backing and put all the pins in the quilt.

Finally, my last goal was to start a new project.  Done!

This small quilt measures 21" x 21" and will sit proudly on top of one of the end tables in the living room in the city.  I finished the top, basted it and even started quilting before I had to pack it up for the weekend.  I'm hoping to complete another identical quilt next week, for the other end table and then start on a table runner for the coffee table.

On top of the quilting accomplishments, I managed to make a wonderful beef stew in the slow cooker, a delicious vegetable and lentil soup:

And some raspberry bread (really yummy!):

So another productive weekend!

That's it for now.  Talk to you later.

Quilty Goals

Well, it's Thursday and that means today's post is going to be about my quilting goals for this weekend.

1.  Finish quilting and put the binding on Lattice Quilt.

2.  Prepare sandwich for Two Percent.

3.  Start a new project (don't know which one yet, but I'm pretty sure it's going to involve 5" squares.

Hopefully, I'll get all of this done AND be able to make a big pot of minestrone soup, a beef stew and some healthy snacks for me and the kids (I have a great recipe for a low fat low cal banana and chocolate chip snack cake that is always very popular around here.  Not sure I can share online however - copyrights and all.)

I'll let you know how I did when I'm back from the cottage on Sunday.

That's it for now.  Talk to you later.

Weigh In Wednesday

If you read my post where I listed my goals for 2012, you know that one of them is to lose 30 lbs by my birthday (on June 2).  With that in mind, I thought I could create a little accountability for myself and also support other bloggers who are trying to get healthy in 2012 by joining Missy Mac at the Wednesday Weigh In.

Weigh In Wednesday

So here are my stats for week 1:

Goal:  -30 lbs
This week:  -2 lbs
Total:  -2 lbs
Inches:  -1 inch
Exercise:  20 mins walk every night with the dog

And here is my before picture:

This picture was taken on December 24, 2011
That's it for now.  Please don't forget to go on over to Missy Mac's and offer support to fellow bloggers.

Vacation Finishes!

In my last post, I mentioned that although I was on vacation for 2 weeks, I really didn't get as much sewing done as I was hoping.  Today, I'd like to share what I did manage to get finished.

Scrappy Log Cabins made from my scraps

This quilt top was completed in January 2010 and it had been sitting in storage (with the rest of my finished, but unquilted tops!) ever since.  Then during the holidays, I was invited to a New Year's Eve dinner at my brother's house.  My father and his wife were going to be there and Ginette (my dad's wife) was the only woman of my family who had yet to receive a quilt from me.  Given the very short notice, I didn't think I would be able to get anything done for her for December 31, so I went through my finished tops and found this one, which I thought would be perfect.

I spent one day quilting and binding it and there it was!  Ready to be wrapped and offered as a gift.  I'm happy to report that she loved it!  :-)  She even said she was starting to get jealous of everyone else's quilts and was wondering when hers would come!

I found this scrappy log cabin pattern in a book called Lots of Scraps - It's Time to Quilt by Jeanne Stauffer and Diane Schmidt (published in September 2008).  I loved making it and the Log Cabin block became my favourite block because of that quilt.

My next "sorta" finish is Two Percent in Veranda.  You'll remember that right before Christmas, I had started cutting the Layer Cakes I ordered.  This one I'm absolutely in love with.  The pattern is from Carrie Nelson's Another Bite of Schnibbles and is my very first "big" Schnibble.

Two Percent in Veranda

The colours in this fabric collection are fabulous - vibrant and happy - and perfect for my bedroom at the cottage!  I bought a king size flat sheet in a beautiful soft green for the backing and I'm going to try to have this one quilted and "really" finished over the next few weekends.

That's it for now.  Talk to you all later!

Goals for 2012

Well I'm back from vacation and start back at work tomorrow.  I'm happy to report that I'm well rested and ready for another year of complete insanity!  I'm so rested in fact that I forgot my password for my work computer!

I wish I had lots and lots of quilty accomplishments to share with you today, but the truth is I really didn't get a lot of sewing done. I guess you could say I spent lots of time enjoying the company of good friends and my lovely children.

I did get a couple of things done during the last two weeks, but I'll be sharing those in future blog posts. For now, I wanted to share with you my 2012 goals (I'm hoping that posting my goals here will ultimately keep me accountable!)

1. Lose 30 lbs by June 2 (my birthday). I've let my weight crawl up over the last 5 years or so and I really need to get it back under control. I am happy to report that I've lost 2 lbs already in the last week.

2. Pay off all credit card debt by December 31.

3. Blog here at least twice every week and post weekly goals for my quilting.

4. Finish all current WIPs (you can see the list on the right side of this blog).

5. Be grateful and be kind - I sometimes forget how lucky I am and with the absolutely crazy pace of life, I am not always as kind to others as I should be.

What about you? What are your goals for 2012?
